Outdoor Learning Level 1

This course is ideal for young people aged 14-19.  The qualification is attached to our Forest Crew sessions where young people are invited to take part in a range of forest based activities, learning skills such as fire lighting & safe management, risk assessment, tool use and maintenance, health & safety in the outdoors, nature identification and sustainable use of natural resources.  

All the tasks for this are undertaken during the sessions, so there is no need for homework and each young person is fully supported to complete the work.  This qualification is the equivalent of a ‘D’ grade at GCSE and can be used to help gain access to further education.   

Course summary: 

On the course, we cover 3 units over 12 sessions.  All of the work is done during the sessions and the majority of it is practical or discussion based, with photographs and witness statements making up most of the assessment.  

Learning, Play and Development in the Natural Environment

This unit is all about trying different activities and understanding how children learn, play and develop through engaging with the natural environment. 

Outdoor Practical Skills

This unit teaches you all sorts of practical skills, from tool use and sharpening, to tying knots to fire lighting and fire management. 

Health and Safety at Work in the Natural Environment

The topics covered in this unit are highly transferable and help you to understand both the rules and the risks of working outdoors and how to safely manage them.
